Buddhist Psychology and Trauma Focused Treatment for Addictions Presented by Stephen Dansiger, PsyD, MFT

Dr. Steve is Clinical Director of Refuge Recovery Centers, the premiere
Buddhist Mindfulness based addictions treatment center. He is also an
EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Certified EMDR Therapist, and provides
training in EMDR with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness.

This presentation will make clear the theory and research behind the
development and implementation of mindfulness and EMDR therapy in
particular as central to addictions treatment, how the 8-phase protocol and AIP
model of EMDR can be the theoretical orientation for addictions treatment, and
through case studies and anecdotal evidence thus far how this model is
progressing, with recommendations for further research and practice. The links
between Buddhist mindfulness and trauma informed addictions treatment are
also explored.

Presentation learning objectives:
1. Understand and describe the history of addictions treatment and the
increasing need for trauma focused care.
2. Understand and describe how EMDR therapy and the 8-phase protocol
can be used as a theoretical orientation for addictions treatment.
3. Understand and describe the Buddhist psychology approach to the
trauma resilience and trauma resolution.
4. Understand and describe the impact of the Buddhist trauma focused
approach on relapse prevention and success after discharge from treatment.
