SBCAMFT & Antioch University Proudly Present:

CREATING METAPHORIC STORIES FOR CHILDREN
with Stephanie Pawlowicz, MA, LMFT

Metaphoric stories help children create cohesive narratives. These narratives play a fundamental role in helping children integrate big feelings they have from some experience in their life that has left them feeling very confused. Telling a story metaphorically helps the child process what they are feeling emotionally.

21st century neuroscience is addressing the importance of giving words to our emotional life. What molds our brains is experience. Or, as Dan Siegel states, “What fires together, wires together”. If we have an experience that stresses the system, processing the experience becomes critical so that we can integrate what is happening in our bodies. Integration plays a vital role in mental well-being.

So, how do we, as therapists, create cohesive narratives for our clients? This step-by-step process will be outlined, giving you the tools you need to start this very exciting process with your client.

Course Learning Objectives

1. The neurological and psychological importance of creating a metaphoric story for the client.

2. Basic understanding of creating a metaphoric story.

3. Understanding how self regulation is achieved.
