In Search of Meaning: Using Self-Compassion and Values Clarification in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

According to Dr. Steven Hayes, ACT Co-founder and leading researcher in 3rd wave psychotherapies, the field of psychology is moving away from techniques aimed at eliminating symptoms and towards "evidence-based processes and procedures" for promoting "human prosperity." These processes involve the ability to approach ourselves with kindness, step back from our thoughts, open to the present moment, and flexibly move in the direction of what matters to us.

This workshop will explore the current research and emerging evidence-based practices. I will present how values clarification can motivate authentic and meaningful clinical change. I will also draw from emerging research on self-compassion and teach simple practices that activate the soothing emotion regulation system.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have the skills to:

  1. Define the process of “values” in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  2. Describe how values can motivate change in psychotherapy
  3. Conduct values clarification exercises with clients
  4. Define components of self-compassion that have been identified through clinical research
  5. Describe a model of self-compassion based on neuroscience
  6. Conduct self-compassion exercises with clients


About the presenter: Diana Hill, PhD

Dr. Hill's goal as a psychologist is to help clients live more meaningful, vital and fulfilling lives. She is dedicated to providing effective, evidence-based therapies in an accepting and compassionate environment. She takes an holistic approach drawing from a rigorous background in the science of behavior, and training in cognitive behavioral, mindfulness-based and contextual behavioral therapies. Dr. Hill is a specialist in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an evidence-based therapy that helps clients unhook from unhelpful patterns, and let go of their struggle with anxiety, depression and behavioral problems so that they can live in alignment with their values. She trained directly with ACT co-founders Drs. Steve Hayes and Kelly Wilson, and has offered multiple trainings in ACT for mental health providers, and provide ongoing consultation to ACT therapists.

Dr. Hill completed her undergraduate work at the University of California at Santa Barbara, majoring in Biopsychology followed by a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology at the University of Colorado at Boulder (7 years of postgraduate training). She collaborated with Stanford University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry in researching mindfulness-based approaches to the treatment of eating disorders and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at La Luna Center Northern Colorado. Prior to moving back to Santa Barbara, Dr. Hill was the clinical director of an intensive outpatient program for the treatment of eating disorders.
