Description (2950 characters max)
Mark has been involved with personal growth, education and therapy for 35 years, since he was in his early 20's. Over the years his interests have included integrative body-mind therapies such as Gestalt, neo-Reichian, and Somatic Experiencing, as well as leading men's groups and anger management groups. He has led workshops at Esalen Institute at Big Sur and has taught Adult Education courses through SBCC since the 1970's.

For the past 20 years he has developed a strong interest in helping couples and individuals create satisfying, emotionally-safe and long-lasting relationships.

"About 1990 I began thinking, "There must a better marriage than the one we're having." Dora and I had been married about 7 years, and though most people would say we had a pretty good marriage, we were arguing more than we wanted, feeling disconnected sometimes, just not feeling like we were having the relationship we could be having. We were both trained as therapists, yet I didn’t feel I really understood what was going on in marriage, or how to do it well. Then I chanced across Harville Hendrix’s book Getting the Love You Want. It made so much sense that we went to a workshop with him. We found it so helpful to us that we each began training in his method, Imago Therapy.”

As Mark and his wife and partner, Dora Li Dunlap, LCSW, continued studying the new, effective approaches to understanding and helping couples, they founded the Relationship Institute of Santa Barbara to provide education, counseling and support to couples and singles seeking long-term passionate, satisfying and emotionally-safe partnerships. To that end they offer couples therapy sessions, individual counseling focusing on relationship issues, groups for individuals seeking long-term partnerships, and classes open to the public through SBCC Adult Education.

In addition to his work with couples, Mark maintains an active practice in individual therapy with both men and women. They focus on dealing with life transitions, learning to manage stress, anger and anxiety, recovering from trauma, and creating enjoyable relationships.
